Why backup matters

• External hard drive — Plug in a USB drive and use Windows Backup or File History. Simple, affordable, and fast. Just remember to keep it plugged in or back up regularly.
• Cloud backup — Services like OneDrive, Google Drive, or Backblaze automatically sync your files online. Great because it protects against theft and fire too.
• Both — The safest approach. A local backup for speed, and a cloud backup for offsite protection. This is what we recommend.

1. Router position — If your router is tucked in a cupboard, behind a TV, or at one end of the house, signal won't reach everywhere. Place it centrally, up high, and in the open.
2. Too many devices — Every phone, tablet, laptop, smart TV, and smart speaker shares your bandwidth. If you have 15+ devices on a basic broadband package, things will slow down.
3. Interference — Microwaves, baby monitors, thick walls, and neighbouring Wi-Fi networks can all interfere with your signal. Switching to the 5GHz band often helps.

Red flags to watch for

1. Urgency and threats — "Your account will be closed in 24 hours" or "Unusual activity detected" are designed to panic you into clicking without thinking.
2. Check the sender's actual email address — The display name might say "Amazon" but the email address could be something like no-reply@amaz0n-security-alerts.com. Always hover over or tap the sender to check.
3. Generic greetings — "Dear Customer" or "Dear User" instead of your actual name is suspicious. Legitimate companies usually know who you are.
4. Dodgy links — Hover over links (don't click!) to see where they actually go. If the URL doesn't match the company's real website, it's a scam.
5. Spelling and grammar mistakes — While scammers are getting better, many phishing emails still contain awkward phrasing or typos that real companies wouldn't make.
6. Unexpected attachments — Never open attachments from unexpected emails, especially .zip, .exe, or Office files with macros.

What to do if you're unsure

Don't click anything in the email. Instead, open a new browser tab and go directly to the company's website (type it in yourself). Log in there to check if there's actually a problem. When in doubt, call the company using the phone number on their official website — not the one in the email.

Why updates matter

Most Windows updates contain security patches — fixes for holes that hackers can exploit to access your computer, steal data, or install ransomware. When you delay updates, you're leaving the front door unlocked.

What about bad updates?

Occasionally, an update causes problems. But this is rare, and Microsoft usually fixes issues quickly. The risk of NOT updating (being vulnerable to known attacks) is much greater than the small chance of an update causing a glitch.

Tips for managing updates

• Set active hours — Tell Windows when you use your PC so it won't restart during work. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Active hours.
• Restart weekly — Get in the habit of restarting your computer at least once a week. Updates often need a restart to complete.
• Don't delay forever — It's fine to pause for a day or two, but don't defer updates for weeks or months.
• Back up first — If you're worried, make sure you have a backup before a major update (like Windows 10 to 11).

Why it matters

If a hacker gets one of your passwords (from a data breach, for example) and you use the same password everywhere, they can access your email, banking, social media — everything. Unique passwords for each account limits the damage.

The three-word method

Pick three random, unrelated words and join them together. Add a number and a symbol. For example: PurpleForkCloud42! — this is long, hard to guess, but easy to picture in your mind.

Use a password manager

The best solution is a password manager like Bitwarden (free) or 1Password. It generates and stores strong unique passwords for every site. You only need to remember one master password.

Quick rules

• Never reuse passwords across sites
• Make them at least 12 characters long
• Turn on two-factor authentication wherever possible
• Never share passwords by email or text
• Change passwords immediately if a service announces a data breach
